11 апреля 2023 года состоялcя третий семинар серии Academic Writing Clinic под названием “Academic writing: specific vocabulary and language”. Встречу провел преподаватель кафедры Мустафа Мухаммед Джамиу. Помимо студентов филологического факультета, на семинаре присутствовали гости из Российского экономического университета имени Г.В. Плеханова.

Спикер представил тему дня, повторив, что одна из основных целей академического письма – донести до читателей информацию ясно. Именно поэтому «академическое письмо имеет свой особый язык, которого необходимо придерживаться». Мустафа рассказал о некоторых аспектах грамматики и стилистики, на которые необходимо обратить пристальное внимание: избегание сокращений, использование соответствующей формальной отрицательной формы (например, not any = no, isn’t = is not) и т.д. После этого участники попрактиковались в редактировании и написании научных текстов в соответствии со стандартами академического письма.

В конце семинара преподаватель подвел итоги встречи и предложил несколько домашних заданий, которые помогли бы закрепить материал и в будущем делать меньше ошибок при академическом письме.

On the 11th of April 2023 the third session of the Academic Writing Clinic seminar series titled “Academic Writing: Vocabulary and Language” was held at the Mass Communication Department. The series was taught by Mustapha Muhammed Jamiu, a lecturer of the Department. In addition to the students of the Faculty of Philology, the seminar was also attended by guests from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

The speaker introduced the topic of the day by reiterating that one of the key purposes of academic writing is to reach the readers with clarity. Therefore, “academic writing has its own distinctive language which has to be adhered to”. In this regard, he further introduced the participants to the importance of ‘coherence, consistency, precision, and transition’ as parts of the key elements of writing for maintaining the language standards in academic writing.

Mustapha equally explored some parts of grammar and styles that are needed for academic writers to pay keen attention to, such as the avoidance of contraction, the usage of the appropriate formal negative form (for example, not any = no, isn’t =is not), limitation of direct questions, and limitation of ‘run on’ expression. After that, the participants were engaged in practical exercises on improving sentences, making them formal according to the academic writing standard. This ignited an atmosphere of enthusiasm and cooperation among the participants.

By the end of the seminar, the instructor walked the participants through the summary and review of the workshop, and assigned some home tasks to consolidate the material and make fewer mistakes in academic writing.
